These transitional months between summer
and fall provide rich opportunities for outdoor
exploration and fun. Give any of the following a

Hunt for edible
mushrooms
Throughout the month | Statewide
Diverse mushrooms can be found
statewide at this time of year, including
puff ball mushrooms in grasslands. In
the woodlands, chicken of the woods
and oyster mushrooms can be found on
oaks and other hardwood trees. Look for
low, moist areas after a period of heavy
rain. For more details and help with
identifi cation, use Mushrooms and Other
Fungi of the Midcontinental United States

Fish for trout in the Pine Ridge
Throughout the month
The narrow, shallow streams of the Pine Ridge provide some of the
state's best trout fi shing. Right now is particularly good trout fi shing,
with abundant grasshoppers to use for bait (or if you're fl y-fi shing, a
hopper pattern works). Trout in these small streams spook easily, so
be stealthy.
