28 Nebraskaland • October 2020 Outdoor Nebraska By Renae Blum From Halloween to harvest and pumpkin-spiced everything, what isn't there to love about October? With great weather and fall color, it's also a prime time to get outdoors. Here are some fun things to try. N Hunt for prairie grouse in the Sandhills Throughout the month With great public access set in a timeless landscape, the Nebraska Sandhills off ers a good adventure for grouse hunters. Seek out areas with choppy hills and put the wind to your back; birds are often loafi ng just on the leeward side of the ridge. Be ready to cover some ground and look for fl ocks of grouse fl ying to and from feeding spots. Fish for walleye and wipers at Elwood Reservoir Throughout the month Elwood Reservoir is consistently one of the best for walleyes and wipers, especially in recent years. And October is a great time to be out fi shing, with fewer anglers on the water and beautiful weather. Try vertical jigging — as straight below the boat as possible — to take full advantage of the fall bite. ELWOOD RESERVOIR IN GOSPER COUNTY SEEN FROM ABOVE PHOTO BY ERIC FOWLER OYSTER MUSHROOM TACOS.
