PORTRAITS FROM THE PAST
My grandpa, Louis N. Hathaway, ran a liquor
and sporting goods store in Auburn. One side
was the liquor, the other side guns, fishing
poles, etc., with deer heads and big fish mounted
on the walls. Of course, I liked the candy counter
with 5-cent salted nut rolls, Clove and Black
Jack gum. Every fall he went hunting with
some buddies — all we ever knew was it was
"out west" in Nebraska. I'd say this picture was
taken in the '50s, possibly '60s. Grandpa is in the
middle and the other two men are unknown.

Our successful deer hunt in 1972 while hunting
near Butte. This picture was taken on my brother's
farm in McLean. From left: me; my son, Brent; our
friend Harold Strelow of Pierce; and my brother,
Leonard, of McLean. I still enjoy hunting with my son
on our farm near Pierce.
I have enjoyed reading the magazine for many years
and look forward to getting it.
