Opening day of pheasant season around
1979. From left: Alan Schmidt (good friend),
Scott Brettmann (me), and my brother, Steve
Brettmann — all in our early 20s.
Photo taken at the Alvin Brettmann farm
southeast of Deshler where Steve and I grew
up.
We did a lot of pheasant and duck hunting
in the 1970s and 80s as teenagers and young
adults.
All three of us were proud to carry Browning
Auto 5 shotguns. We saved up to buy used ones
while still in high school.

Taken in August 1979 of Don and Jan
Ortmeier's family at Ponca State Park.
We took our boat loaded with seven
bicycles and camped in a 9-by 9-foot
tent for three days. Don, Jan, Pam, Greg,
Steve, Roger and Sandra rode bicycles in
the hills and also rode horses. We fished
the Missouri River and had a great time
and were busy all the time. After that
we camped at Weigand Campground at
Lewis and Clark State Recreation Area
above Gavin's Point Dam for another
three days.
