THE LAST STOP
By Jeff Kurrus
THE HANDS OF MANY
Matthew Marx, longtime Nebraskaland
Magazine contributor, has perfectly
photogenic hands — not too small, large,
hairy, knuckly, warty, veiny or otherwise.
For more than a decade, the magazine has
featured Matt's hands many times, holding
anything from fishing reels to shotguns.
Matt is a willing participant. Plus, he's
knowledgeable about the outdoors — he's
been fishing for more than 20 years and
comfortable using various firearms. I could
always count on Matt to hold a gun or
other piece of outdoor equipment correctly,
helping to accentuate any scene for
a photo.
But sometimes Matt isn't around, like
when I was capturing this image of crappies
on the cleaning table last March. That day,
with an idea for a photo in mind, I had to find
a willing participant, which meant I had to
coerce the first person I could find into being
a hand model. This person, who shall remain
nameless, did well enough — almost.
Any seasoned angler would know that you
never fillet a fish without lifting the pectoral
fin first. Unfortunately, I wasn't smart
enough to see this as the photographer, so I
really missed Matt's attention to detail that
day. Plus, this friend's hand was way too
veiny and much too knuckly.
Thanks a lot, Matt, for failing
the magazine.
