November 2021 • Nebraskaland 73 Pheasant Hunting near Arapahoe, 1982. The results of a pheasant hunt in 1982 in the Arapahoe area with (left to right) John Helms and Brittany — Twister; Ron Hines and Irish setter — Riley; Burton Foutz and English setter — Patti; and Gary Helms with Beagle — Ginger. It was hard to keep the dogs from wanting the pheasants on the ground in front and in the hands of the hunters. The beagle was known as "the bird beagle," and she tracked pheasants like it was her mission. The pointing dogs and owners learned to trust her instincts when tracking and flushing. She did not let many wounded birds escape either. – Gary Helms, Kearney Fishing for Sunfish 1950s. My little brother Jim, right, and me — sporting matching hats and shirts, no less — caught these underwhelming "sunnies" in the mid-50s from the creek near the old Moseley place west of Weissert at the T intersection. What little remains of Weissert lies a few miles east of Broken Bow. We also caught "the fishing bug" in those days and remain intrepid Nebraska anglers at ages 71 and 68. – Steve Moseley (York) and Jim Moseley (Scottsbluff)
