30 Nebraskaland • May 2023 Outdoor Nebraska By Renae Blum Celebrate the beautiful weather and get outdoors. Here are some entertaining ways to enjoy this time of year: watching wildlife, fi shing, visiting an outdoor expo and more. N Free Fishing and Park Entry Day May 20 | Statewide During this annual event, you can enjoy a Saturday of fi shing or state park activities without the need to purchase a fi shing or park entry permit for the day. It's a perfect occasion to give fi shing a try, or to visit a state park you've always wanted to see. Make a day of it and bring a picnic basket! JEFF KURRUS, NEBRASKALAND Bluegill fi shing at interstate lakes All month; best in late May | Central Nebraska Just off Interstate 80 in central Nebraska, particularly the Platte River Valley, lie several lakes that are popular spots for anglers. They also have great opportunities for bluegill this month, where they'll be hanging out in shallower water. To catch them, keep it simple — a bobber, a small hook and a piece of nightcrawler is all you need. JEFF KURRUS, NEBRASKALAND
