MAY 2015 • NEBRASKAland 37 WOMEN'S DANCE Women's Traditional Representing the grace and modesty of a woman, dancer's steps include a bounce style, zigzag or side-step. With a fringe shawl folded over one arm, dancers will also hold an eagle feather fan, which is raised in honor of the men and the drum. Jingle Dress This healing dance was received to the Ojibwe through a vision by a medicine man to cure his daughter. Rolled-up snuff can lids are attached to bright colored ribbons that sway and sound during the quick zigzag steps of the dancer. Fancy Shawl Brightly decorated shawls with long ribbon or fringe appear as wings with a dancer's quick, twirling movements said to mimic the moves of a butterfly. Many dancers wear calf- high beaded moccasins. A youth jingle dancer awaits the next song at Fort Robinson State Park. A colorful fancy shawl dancer at Fort Robinson State Park.
