City Hawks From February 2014 until March 2015, Steve Andel watched two red-tailed hawks along Antelope Creek in Lincoln. He witnessed them eat, mate and rear chicks, becoming fascinated with their daily routines. The raptors blended into a cityscape, first trying to build a nest on top of a parking garage before eventually constructing one in a pine tree. Once they had chicks, they would trade places throughout the day – one hunting while one guarded the nest – the routines of these city hawks continuing through the seasons above the Capital city. 46 NEBRASKAland • OCTOBER 2015
