48 NEBRASKAland • OCTOBER 2015 Above: During mating season the male would catch food and bring it to the female. Here, the male has caught a vole and is flying to the female. Right: Street lights provide a great perch for the hawks. They use them while they're hunting. In this photo the hawk is scanning the ground for food at sunset. Opposite Top: The male hawk eats a duck in the middle of a baseball field. The duck was already dead when the hawk came upon it. He must have been happy to find food since it was the middle of winter when food is hard to find. Opposite Bottom: Nest building is split between the female and male hawks. Both gather nesting materials from the surrounding area. The female is shown here bringing a large twig in her mouth to add to the nest.
