Each fall, the Bird Conservancy of the Rockies operates a banding station from the Sawmill Shelter, capturing scores of red crossbill, spotted towhees and other species that are common in the park. The first-ever dusky flycatcher to be banded in the state was processed there in 2013. Prized species such as mountain chickadees, pine warblers, red-naped sapsuckers, Stellar's jays and lesser goldfinches also have been captured by the banders. The park also has a new butterfly garden and naturalists provide informative programs throughout the summer. Still a Hot Spot Regardless of the challenges Nebraska's first state park has faced in its first 95 years, it remains one of western Nebraska's prime attractions, and with its location just nine miles from Chadron, is a great place to set up camp or visit for the day. Nearby are the wealth of Pine Ridge attractions, such as the expansive Nebraska National Forest and Fort Robinson State Park. South Dakota's Black Hills are just an hour's drive to the north. Despite a setback or two, Chadron State Park remains a favorite destination for families looking for a relaxing getaway in the beautiful Pine Ridge. With so much going for it, no wonder its flame continues to burn bright. ■ Chadron State Park has overnight accommodations to suit a wide variety of travelers. It offers reservations for cabins and half of the electrical campsites up to one year in advance. The remaining campsites are available first-come, first-served. Guests can plan vacations, check for availability and make their reservations online 24 hours a day, seven days a week or can call the Nebraska State Parks reservation call center at 402- 471-1414, Monday through Friday between 9 a.m. and 6 p.m. CT. • 22 cabins available for rental. They are air-conditioned, heated and furnished with blankets, towels, stoves, refrigerators, silverware and cooking utensils. • 70 camping pads with 20- and 30-amp electrical hookups, as well as 18 primitive sites. Amenities for campers include showers, dump station, laundry, picnic tables, grills and a playground for the kids.
