S ince 2011, the Outdoor Education Rendezvous at Niobrara State Park kicks off with a resounding shot from a muzzleloader rifle, while volunteers from the Ponca Tribe bless the day by drum, prayer and song. About 700 children arrive per year, hailing from schools as far west as Butte, east as Hartington, south as Tilden, and as far north as Bon Homme, South Dakota. This year, 22 schools are expected on May 6. On this gorgeous spring day by the Niobrara River, children, alongside parents and teachers, will enjoy a fun day of hands- on outdoor learning, exercise, sun and fresh air. The Rendezvous is about creating firsts: introducing kids to the outdoors and keeping them there, said Niobrara Niobrara State Park in Knox County will host its fifth Outdoor Education Rendezvous on May 6.
