JUNE 2016 • NEBRASKAland 49
A
summer thunderstorm can serve as a reminder
of how the Panhandle's terrain has become so
wondrous. Each gully-washer eats a little away
at the surface of this landscape – hardly noticeable in
terms of days, but over time shapes places such as this
section of badlands west of Chadron. In the relatively
brief period of just centuries, humans have documented
the erosion of prominent landmarks such as Chimney
Rock. Regardless, barring any incredible natural or
unnatural events, these stubborn landforms will still
be around for countless generations to gaze upon. We
must enjoy them while we can, though – they will
surely look much different millions of years from
now. ■
