Hunters ride away on a country road in Persia, Iowa, in February 2014.
T
he love of horses and hounds
led to the development of
the North Hills Hunt club in the
Loess Hills outside of Omaha. A
small group of enthusiastic horse
owners, which included Taylor
Snow, owner of Snow Co., and
Donovan Ketzler, owner of the
Dehner Boot Co., were some of
its first members. Snow became
the first master of foxhounds and
the first huntsman.
The North Hills Hunt started
in the late fall of 1964 when
an unofficial hunt was held at
Allan and Ann Mactier's home
in Omaha with just two hounds.
The first pack of hounds was
obtained in 1965, and in January
of 1966, NHH held its first
official hunt. In 1968, NHH was
recognized by the Masters of
Foxhounds Association – the
governing organization for
foxhunting clubs in the U.S. and
Canada.
The sport is called foxhunting
but because of the tremendous
increase in the coyote population
in Nebraska and Iowa, it has
become more of the sport of
"coyote chasing!"
As a member of the North
Hills Hunt, you will establish
friendships that will last a
lifetime. Whether you become
a member to ride your horse or
to hunt or to just watch hounds
work in the countryside on a
beautiful morning, you will love
the camaraderie of NHH. NHH
has grown from a few riders and
their families to over 100 different
members. You might find yourself
riding next to a general from
Offutt Air Force Base, a doctor,
school teacher, businessman,
housewife, attorney, etc. NHH is
dedicated to riding to hounds,
combining the traditions of
a time-honored sport with
Midwest-friendly camaraderie.
