JULY Early July • Check the outdoor calendar at Outdoornebraska.org for July Fourth celebrations at various parks statewide. • Hunt for edible wildflowers, including purslane, prickly-pear cactus pads and fruit, and wild grapes. Read Kay Young's book Wild Seasons for more information. • Watch for great blue herons fledging. Their rookeries are easily identified as a grouping of large nests in the tops of tall trees near water, including Lake Ogallala SRA and Jeffrey Lake WMA. Late July • Stargaze at Merritt Reservoir State Recreation Area, one of the nation's top locations for viewing the night sky. • Tune your bow and start shooting for the upcoming archery deer and fall turkey seasons. • Find monarch butterfly eggs on milkweed plants, and track their metamorphosis from egg through the caterpillar stages to a butterfly. The entire process takes about 4-6 weeks for the monarchs laying eggs in Nebraska.
