HINT: This issue's visitor is not on page 3, 14, 23, 42, 43, 45, 46-51, or 68 (back cover). NEBRASKAland Visitor Silverfish (Lepisma saccharina) are common household pests, frequently found in basements. The insect is 1 ⁄3 to 1 ⁄2 inches long, with two long antennae on its head and three tail-like appendages on its posterior. Their bodies are slender, carrot-shaped, and silver to gray in color. Silverfish prefer foods high in protein, sugars and starches, including cereal, flour, fabrics, and glue and paste. They will even feed on wallpaper and book bindings. Silverfish prefer high humidity and cool, dark spaces, and are active at night. They are considered a nuisance pest, usually causing very little real damage. Control is often accomplished by making changes to their habitat. Fix any leaky plumbing and use a dehumidifier to reduce moisture. Seal cracks and crevices, and get rid of old papers and boxes where silverfish may hide. Finally, remove food sources from damp areas or place in sealed containers.
