What to Do in October Time Well Spent T here's much to look forward to in October, including a new pheasant hunting season; swaths of red, orange and yellow lighting up the trees; plenty of leisurely fishing and a full menu of park events. Try the following events and ideas for starters. ■ PHOTO BY JULIE GEISER PHOTO BY JULIE GEISER By Renae Blum PHOTO BY JENNY NGUYEN Mushroom Hunting Throughout the month Statewide A variety of delectable wild fungi can be found in Nebraska at this time of year, including chicken of the woods, giant puffballs and oyster. Some species spring out of dead or dying trees, others out of soil; study up on what you're looking for to ensure correct identifi cation and to make the search easier. A good time to go mushroom hunting is a few days after a heavy rain. Youth Pheasant Hunting Season Oct. 21-22 Statewide Nebraska's youth pheasant hunting season, held the weekend before the season opener (Oct. 21-22), offers kids ages 15 and younger the opportunity to hunt without needing to compete for birds with more experienced hunters. To increase their chances of success, pheasants will be stocked at a number of wildlife management areas ahead of the season.
