saloons manned by a host of
bartenders who ministered to the
city's thirst for beer and hard liquor.
The Omaha Bee on Sept. 26, 1886, noted the
"many things, interesting and curious, that might be written
about the Omaha bartenders."
The Bee noted that each saloon usually employed two men
behind the bar. However, "not more than a score ... are first-
class bar tenders."

This little shack was said to have been the first saloon
in Palisade, Nebraska. The story is that it was located
across the tracks because local women had petitioned
town officials to prohibit a saloon in town. Local men
honor the shack's history in this 1915 photo. NSHS
