However, sometimes the old ideas work just as well – none any better than a scavenger hunt. With clipboard and pen in hand this month, my kids will spend hours trying to find items at one of Nebraska's state parks and recreation areas. While every list will be different, here are some standards to spot to get you started this April. • Pine cone • Squirrel • Blooming flower (extra points for being able to name it) • Good skipping rock • Tree stump • Bird nest • Bird feather (extra points) • Spider web • Something fuzzy • 3 different leaves (extra points) • Hole in a tree • Cloud that looks like an animal • Butterfly • Animal track (extra points) • Chewed leaf • Sign • Turkey • Predator (e.g. coyote, red-tailed hawk) • Water • Something prickly This list is compiled from a number of outdoor scavenger lists found online as well as other items that have worked well for us in the past. The main idea, especially when taking kids in the outdoors, is to make sure that they are having more than a walk in the park. These walks are fine for adults, but if your younger sidekicks are already wired to find clouds that look like frogs, then go ahead and give them more to find. ■
