Spring Muster at Fort Hartsuff
April 21-22
Fort Hartsuff State Historical Park
The grounds of Fort Hartsuff State Historical Park bustle with relics of
Nebraska history during the Spring Muster. Working busily are cooks
preparing period meals, bla cksmiths plying their trade and surgeons tending
to the wounded. Meanwhile, soldiers, women and children carry out daily life
at the fort. Expect to see cannon fi re, roll calls, infantry drills, and civilian
activities such as church services and women's sewing groups.

Blooming Pasque
Flowers
Throughout the month
Statewide
Easily recognized by its purple fl ower and
hairy leaves and stems, pasque fl owers
are one of the earliest fl owers that people
see blooming in the spring, says Monica
Macoubrie, a wildlife education assistant.
"People know when they see this fl ower, spring
has defi nitely arrived," she writes, adding:
"These small purple fl owers are usually found
in northern Nebraska and along the Niobrara
River. Normally found in prairies, they can
bloom anywhere where there is lots of sun and
dry, rocky soil."

Throughout the month
Statewide
Spring gathering of wild edibles goes beyond just morels – try wild asparagus.
This wild delicacy prefers full sun and can be found in areas that have a lot
of moisture but are not fully saturated. Try pastures, fence rows, meadows,
ditches, roadsides and riverbeds.
