Working busily are cooks preparing period meals, bla cksmiths plying their trade and surgeons tending to the wounded. Meanwhile, soldiers, women and children carry out daily life at the fort. Expect to see cannon fi re, roll calls, infantry drills, and civilian activities such as church services and women's sewing groups. APRIL 2018 • NEBRASKAland 27 Photograph Blooming Pasque Flowers Throughout the month Statewide Easily recognized by its purple fl ower and hairy leaves and stems, pasque fl owers are one of the earliest fl owers that people see blooming in the spring, says Monica Macoubrie, a wildlife education assistant. "People know when they see this fl ower, spring has defi nitely arrived," she writes, adding: "These small purple fl owers are usually found in northern Nebraska and along the Niobrara River. Normally found in prairies, they can bloom anywhere where there is lots of sun and dry, rocky soil." Forage for Wild Asparagus Throughout the month Statewide Spring gathering of wild edibles goes beyond just morels – try wild asparagus. This wild delicacy prefers full sun and can be found in areas that have a lot of moisture but are not fully saturated. Try pastures, fence rows, meadows, ditches, roadsides and riverbeds.
