Outdoor Nebraska

March is transition month in Nebraska. From open water to the
first gobbles of spring turkeys, the world is changing right in
front of our eyes. Make sure you're outside to see it.

Archery Spring Turkey
All Month Long | Statewide
For hunters willing to scout, pick their setup carefully, and patiently wait for
a flock to arrive, archery turkey season offers a fun challenge and a chance to
enjoy spring's first signs of life. Because early-season birds are often bunched
in winter flocks, scouting fields, roost sites and travel corridors are especially
important. Archery hunters are most effective from ground blinds, where
movement is concealed and shot opportunities are controlled.
Effective bow setups focus on close encounters; place several decoys within
10-15 yards of the blind to draw curious birds within range. Calling should be
subtle to spark interest. TEXT BY RYAN SPARKS. PHOTO BY ERIC FOWLER, NEBRASKALAND
Open-Water Fishing
Watch the Weather | Statewide
By March, the itchiest of anglers can't wait to get
back on the open water. Fish activity — including
bluegills, crappies and even larger fish — tends to
increase as the water temperature approaches 50
degrees, so diligently watch the weather.
"Start on north shorelines," said fisheries biologist
Aaron Blank, "preferably lined with rocks, as
these areas warm quickest." Fish these areas for
increased activity beneath the water's surface.
