52 Nebraskaland • June 2026 A Retrospective on Nebraskaland Photography By Eric Fowler TOP LEFT: Today, photographers battle dust on the sensors of their digital cameras. In the late 1960s or early 1970s, Lou Ell stalked these elk on the Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge with his Graflex Speed Graphic camera, not knowing until the sheet film was developed that an ant had hitched a ride in the camera. TOP RIGHT: Louis Lovenberg, known to Outdoor Nebraska readers as Lou Ell, was a writer, photographer and videographer for Nebraska Game and Parks for 17 years. BOTTOM LEFT: The tell-tale circular highlights show Greg Beaumont used a mirror reflex lens similar to a telescope to capture this image of a duck on the Crescent Lake National Wildlife Refuge in the early 1970s. BOTTOM LEFT: Jon Farrar, pictured here in 1981, spent countless hours photographing wildlife from a variety of blinds, including this one he built from conduit and chicken wire to fit on his johnboat, during his 42 years with Nebraskaland.
