June 2026 • Nebraskaland 51
These portraits are powerful. They are our history, our
memories and proof that we were all young once. For many,
these images allow us to live vicariously through others as
we continue to read Nebraskaland and, in our memories, we
remain forever young.
"Portraits" is also where we can bask in the glory of others
in hopes of having at least one more shot of that same
feeling ourselves.

My Favorite Picture, ca. 1916
This photograph in Lindsay of my grandfather, Fred
Loeffler, is my favorite. He did not shoot the animal,
only posed with it, as I imagine others did as well. He
was 17 years old.

My dad, Tom, taught me to love the outdoors at a young
age. He passed away several years ago, but I am forever
grateful for all of the memories we shared in the field.

During Thanksgiving weekend on the family farm,
my dad, Robert, and I hunted alongside our always
reliable German shorthair, Toni.

A Different Sort of Mixed Bag Hunt, ca. 1910s
Ernest Wagner, Herman Bolz and Charlie Feurer after what
looks to be a opossum, rabbit and squirrel hunt.

Fishing at Lake Mac, 1948
My dad, Henry Adkinson, Floyd Nickolson, Winnie

their catch of the day.
