Taxidea taxus
Head into vast stretches of
grasslands and, if you are lucky,
you will spot an American badger.
These short animals are easily
identified by their black and white
striped face, stubby legs and
long, gray-brown fur. They have
characteristically long claws, which
allow them to be extremely efficient
diggers – a skill used for both
digging a burrow and hunting. They
are carnivorres, eating mainly ground
squirrels, gophers, mice and other small
burrowing mammals. They spend much
of their life underground in large burrows
which can be up to 10 meters long.
Badgers are solitary animals and mainly
active at night, although they can be seen any
time of day. They do not hibernate, but do spend
much of the winter sleeping underground. They
emerge on warm winter days. ■
