Backyard Bird Feeding Throughout the winter | Statewide Food for birds may be scarce right now. Help our feathered friends by setting up a feeder. Nebraskaland Regional Editor Julie Geiser says that birds love to snack on sunfl ower seeds, cracked corn, saffl ower seeds, Niger or thistle seeds, peanut hearts and shelled, unsalted and dry-roasted peanuts. Also, keep your feeders clean to keep hungry birds from getting sick. "Wash your feeders at least monthly in a light 9:1 water-to-bleach solution, then rinse thoroughly and allow to air dry," Geiser says. Get Ready for Spring Turkey Throughout the winter | Statewide Get a jump on spring turkey season and start planning this winter. Outdoor Education Specialist Aaron Hershberger recommends looking ahead and seeing what vacation days you can lock in. Also, take a look through your gear, including camera equipment. Take stock of what's missing, or what needs to be replaced or fi xed. You can also use this time to think about your goals – places you want to go and milestones you want to achieve.
