Each year the Fort Kearny Expo brings together people of
all ages and outdoor experience levels to learn about fishing,
animals of Nebraska, Dutch oven cooking, shooting sports,
archery, kayaking and more. Hands-on activities allow for
that first spark of excitement; visitors can see and touch
what they're learning. Live turtles, fish and other wildlife are
often featured.
The Fort Kearny Expo takes place Saturday, May 11, from
9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Fort Kearny State Recreation Area,
just south of Kearney. The expo is free to all visitors, made
possible by generous sponsors. Only a park permit is required
for vehicles to enter the SRA.
Special guest Sam Larson of Lincoln is a wilderness
instructor, author, and speaker. Last year he won History
Channel's survival reality TV challenge Alone. Larson
will talk about the show, along with survival skills such
as primitive fire starting, knife skills and the edible and
medicinal plants of Nebraska.
"Outdoor education is education in its oldest and purest
form. I'll be bringing skills to the expo that help people to be
better informed and be able to enjoy nature more," Larson
said.
