110 Nebraskaland • April 2021
TOP LEFT: The yellow warbler consists of some 38 subspecies.
They are common spring and fall migrants statewide.
TOP RIGHT: The highest abundance of grasshopper sparrows
in North America is centered on the Nebraska Sandhills,
according to the Breeding Bird Survey data from 2007-2013.
MIDDLE RIGHT: While migrants of western kingbirds are
common statewide, including the Panhandle, this species
has a strange affinity for the eastern edge of Eppley Airfield
in Omaha.
BOTTOM RIGHT: The red-headed woodpecker's breeding
distribution and abundance appears to have changed little
since settlement by European Americans. It is a common
regular breeder east and central, and uncommon west.
