became convinced the otters knew I
was there and were messing with me.
The transmitters have a sensor that
causes the "beep, beep, beep" heard on
a receiver to pick up speed when the
otter is moving. And the closer it is, the
louder the beep. At times, the bleeping
beeping was so loud and fast I thought
an otter was going to crawl in the blind
with me. I now know they were just
running around the den, laughing.
Only twice did I actually see an otter.
The first time it was way too dark to

second time, after Fricke
had moved on to greener
pastures, Dave Remple
put me on a Platte River
den at the Crane Trust
south of Grand Island,
and I finally connected.
By then, it was too
late.
