14 NEBRASKAland • JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2015 A Winter Reading By Amy Kucera Nebraska State Historical Society's Eyewitness at Wounded Knee (Richard E. Jensen, R. Eli Paul and John E. Carter) is an extensive compilation of historic photographs paired with modern essays that investigate the December 1890 massacre of the Lakota people by the 7th Cavalry of the U.S. Army at Wounded Knee Creek. The collection, featuring more than 130 images by photographers George Trager and Clarence Grant Morelodge, leaves one stunned with emotions as silent and raw as the snow that appeared on the cold ground where so many were slain.
