NOVEMBER 2015 • NEBRASKAland 19 NEBRASKAland Visitor and Last issue's winner of the Visitor drawing was Mike Holtzen of Yutan, Nebraska, who found the crane fly on page 36. Readers are encouraged to contact NEBRASKAland within 10 days after this issue's publication with the correct page number and name of this issue's "Visitor" – a critter found in Nebraska. We will then gather the correct entries and draw one to win a NEBRASKAland mug. To enter each month, write: NEBRASKAland Visitor 2200 North 33rd Street, Lincoln, NE 68503. Or e-mail: Tim.Reigert@Nebraska.gov with "Visitor" in the subject line of the message. HINT: I'm not even giving a hint this month it's so easy to find. Crane flies may look like giant mosquitoes, and both are true flies in the order Diptera, but crane flies are much larger and do not bite or sting. They make up a large family, Tipulidae, with more than 1,500 species of crane flies found in North America. Crane flies can be recognized by their long, brownish-gray bodies, extremely long, thin legs, and single pair of slender wings, which may have a span of up to three inches. Crane flies go through complete metamorphosis: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Larvae are often aquatic, typically found on stream bottoms, though some species are terrestrial and found in the soil. Most larvae feed on detritus, and play an important role in breaking down organic matter. The larvae are also attractive to fish, and can be collected and used for bait. role i down The l coll for PHOTO BY JENNY NGUYEN November 1 Late Doe/Fawn antelope hunting season opens November 1 Most 2016 annual permits and stamps available for purchase at OutdoorNebraska.org November 1 Muskrat and beaver trapping seasons open November 1 Hunting and trapping seasons open for raccoon, Virginia opossum, long-tailed weasel, mink, red fox, gray fox and badger November 2 Woodcock hunting season closes November 2 Christmas Dinner Tickets Tickets go on sale for Historical Christmas Dinner at Fort Robinson State Park (SP), Crawford November 3, 17 Ladies Day at the Range Nebraska Game and Parks Outdoor Education Center, Lincoln November 5 Backyard Bird Habitat Attracting Birds in Winter, Nebraska Game and Parks Outdoor Education Center, Lincoln November 7 Oh Deer, Deer Workshop Wildcat Hills SRA and Nature Center, Gering November 7 Candlelight Tour Fort Atkinson State Historical Park, Fort Calhoun November 7-8 Pioneer Longrifle Rendezvous Indian Cave SP, Shubert November 8 Veterans Appreciation Day Roger G.
