Hunting South-central Nebraska
I always like to
hunt from about
10:00 to 2:00,
when the birds are
settled into mid-day
loafing cover and
will sit tighter. In
the morning they
are out feeding and
jumpy, and they often go back out to
feed in late afternoon. I like to walk tall
grasses or weed patches next to crop
fields, especially corn. In a big grassy
field I will pick out the weed patches
to walk. Birds will feed in the weed
patches and hang around their edge
or in them. I like to hunt warm, calm,
sunny days – the birds seem to sit tight
on such days.
Ruger, a black Labrador retriever,
retrieves a fallen rooster at Pheasant
Bonanza Hunt Club and Kennel in
Tekamah.
Fence lines are good places to look for pheasants, where roosters feel the pinch and
are pressured to flush out the sides.
