14 NEBRASKAland • APRIL 2016 Public Mushrooms By Jeff Kurrus When first-timers consider hunting morel mushrooms on public land, they think river properties. So let's go there first. The following river-adjacent properties are excellent locales for spring morels. • Eugene T. Mahoney State Park • Indian Cave State Park • Louisville State Recreation Area • Platte River State Park • Schramm Park State Recreation Area • Two Rivers State Recreation Area However, rivers aren't the only locations where morel mushrooms can be abundant. When you're contemplating morel hunting, think about old-growth forest and creek edges. Once you widen to these parameters, the following public areas come into play: • Branched Oak State Recreation Area • Burchard Wildlife Management Area • Grove Lake Wildlife Management Area • Pawnee Lake State Recreation Area • Twin Lakes Wildlife Management Area • Yellow Banks Wildlife Management Area But this short list is merely a start. Once you visit these, broaden out your search to other similar-looking places throughout the state to find one of nature's most delectable dinners. ■ PHOTO BY DOUG CARROLL
