Unusual Places to Stay Overnight Time Well Spent H otels are nice, but sometimes you need to ditch more traditional options and stay in – let's say, an Indian tipi or a remodeled caboose. These are just a few unique lodging options you can find at a Nebraska state park or recreation area. Read on to learn about some options sure to pique your curiosity. ■ PHOTO BY JUSTIN HAAG Fort Robinson State Park Fort Robinson State Pa Pa Park Historic Lodging Fort Robinson is full of history. An active military post from 1874 to 1948, the fort was the site of the tragic Cheyenne Outbreak, the last great gathering place of the Sioux Nation and a World War II POW camp. Today, quarters where the fort's officers and soldiers slept have been converted into lodging for park visitors. You can stay in the 1909 enlisted men's quarters, or in the former officers' quarters, which date from 1874 to 1909. These options sleep between two and 20 people. Comanche Hall sleeps up to 60 people, making it perfect for a family reunion or other large group. All options have kitchens, baths and bedrooms; larger cabins also feature living rooms. Cabins are furnished with blankets, towels, stoves, refrigerators, silverware and cooking utensils. Lodging is available from April 1 through Nov. 30. To make a reservation to any of these destinations, call the Nebraska State Parks reservation call center at (402) 471-1414. 52 NEBRASKAland • APRIL 2016 By Renae Blum
