available at the park's activity center,
the Trading Post, and the new course
will build upon that popularity.
After the snow falls families have
begun congregating at the park's upper
elevations where staff last year cleared
a hillside especially for sledding.
"The sled run was really a hit this
winter," Galbraith said. "Because the
terrain was naturally suited for such an
activity, it didn't cost us a lot of money
to create. We just cleared the area, put
up signage and the people came."
Active visitors also enjoy facilities
for tennis and sand volleyball, as well
as a vintage baseball field. Walkers
and runners can often be seen on the
park's paved roads or its system of
about 15 miles of trails. The park may
be explored by guided horseback rides,
mountain bikes or foot. In the winter,
cross-country skiers take to the trails.
The park also features playground
equipment, shelters and grills, making
it a great place for dining outdoors.
Bedding Down
Whether "roughing it" in the tent
or kicking back in a fully furnished
cabin, visitors to Chadron State Park
enjoy a wide range of options for
a good night's rest. The furnished
cabins constructed by the Civilian
Conservation Corps early last century
have hosted generations of visitors.
Those looking for more modern
facilities often stay in the park's
duplexes. A group facility nearby
provides a place for a wide range of
get-togethers, including meetings,
family reunions and weddings.
Last but not least is the park's
campground, which has developed a
reputation for its laid-back relaxing
atmosphere. It has sites with and
without electrical hookups, as well as
showers, laundry facilities, playground
