Each year, hundreds of entries from students throughout Nebraska are judged in late March or early April at the Gering Civic Center. The deadline to enter is March 15. Last year's contest was won by Creighton Scott, a 16-year-old student of the Debie Plog Art Studio in Omaha. Scott used color pencil to portray a king eider flying over water with snow-covered mountains in the background. The king eider is a large sea duck that spends most of the year in coastal marine environments and breeds on the Arctic tundra in June and July. ■ For details about the competition, contact Lydia Patrick, Nebraska's contest coordinator, at lydia_patrick@fws.gov. By Justin Haag Located in the heart of the Pine Ridge, Chadron State Park serves as a prime getaway for travelers to enjoy winter scenery and activities. The park's trail system provides opportunities for cross- country skiing, snowshoeing and hiking. A sled run, which was new in 2015, has proved popular among park visitors of all ages. Also, the park can serve as a base for visitors enjoying other popular winter activities in the region, such as ice fishing. During winter, the park's modernized duplex cabins are available by reservation. Each of the six quarters has a living room, kitchen, bathroom and two bedrooms – one with a queen bed and another with two singles. A minimum two- night stay is required, but most people won't want to leave once they're there.
