PHOTO BY ERIC FOWLER Christmas Bird Counts Dec. 14 – Jan. 5 Indian Cave State Park Calling all birders – we need your help! Christmas Bird Counts are an annual tradition across the nation in which participants identify as many species as possible over a 15-mile radius. You'll have the chance to aid scientists and conservation efforts while engaging in some friendly competition and stretching your legs. Light Up the Fort Dec. 3 – 31 Fort Robinson State Park The historic grounds of Fort Robinson State Park are always a visual treat – but hardly more so than in December, when volunteers and park staff drape sparkling Christmas lights over many of the park buildings. Take a drive to see it; it'll definitely get you in the holiday spirit. Contact the park at 308-665-2900 if you'd like to volunteer to put up lights. Open Hunting Seasons Various dates December is a great month for hunting in Nebraska – many seasons are open, and there's less competition afoot, as the frenzy of season openings is mostly past. Take advantage of free time from work or school to hunt for species such as pheasant, turkey, grouse and deer. PHOTO BY ROCKY HOFFMANN DECEMBER 2016 • NEBRASKAland 33 PHOTO BY JUSTIN HAAG
