10 NEBRASKAland • MAY 2017 South Sioux City to Niobrara State Park Road Trip By Hannah Hundley, Nebraska Tourism Commission PHOTO BY ERIC FOWLER W hat was once a popular route for outlaws, thieves and lawmen is now the perfect route for those seeking adventure and cultural awakenings. This month's Nebraska road trip takes you from South Sioux City, on the Outlaw Scenic Byway, to the wonder-filled water bluffs of Niobrara State Park. Sioux City is a three-state metropolitan area tucked in the northeastern corner of Nebraska. Here, visitors can find a thriving music and arts culture. To the west, travelers will encounter charming towns full of hidden gems. Enjoy a delightful farmers market, craft fair and tearoom at St. James Marketplace, two miles east of Wynot. Next, gaze at the grandeur of some of the most breathtaking historical churches in the state, including Saints Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Bow Valley and the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in St. Helena. The downstairs speakeasy tavern of the Historic Argo Hotel in Crofton is another must-see – rumor is that the hotel is haunted. Then, try your luck at the Ohiya Casino on the Santee Reservation. This 12,000-square-foot casino, operated by the Santee Tribe, offers authentic American Indian jewelry, blankets and other crafts. Once you reach Niobrara State Park, take a horseback trail ride led by wranglers or go fishing in the nearby rivers. There are also 14 miles of hiking trails. Other areas of interest are the Ponca Cemetery, Mormon Monument and Standing Bear monument. Tip: Try and find the highest hill in the park for the most spectacular view of the river and surrounding landscape – it's the perfect place to watch the sunset. ■ The Immaculate Conception Church in Saint Helena in Cedar County is a beautiful centerpiece to this northeastern Nebraska town. At Niobrara State Park in Knox County, 19 cabins overlook the Missouri River, giving an impressive view of the valley below. While in South Sioux City Travelogue PHOTO BY JEFF KURRUS Visit the 45,000 square foot Art Center, which includes a hands-on children's gallery. Go back in time at a number of historical attractions, including the August 21, 1804 Lewis and Clark campsite, Old St. John's and the 4th Street District. Spend a day at the Siouxland Freedom Park to honor those – past, present, and future – who so bravely sacrifice for our nation's freedoms. Take a look at visitsouthsiouxcity. com for a complete list of local attractions, including a month-by- month calendar of events.
