Throughout September and October,
more than 80,000 put-and-take rainbow
trout were stocked in public fishing areas
across the state. The fish are approximately
10 inches in length and can be caught using
a variety of tactics in open water, including
spinners, salmon eggs on a hook and a
bobber and artificial flies.
However, catching these trout through the
ice may be even more fun than open water.
With just a jig and a waxworm, anglers can
find these fish near cover along with other
species. But once hooked, they give the
panfish angler a considerably different fight,
as this hard-charging fish nearly refuses to
be brought to the surface of the ice.
It's an added bonus for those anglers who
are bluegill and crappie fishing on the hard
water throughout the winter months.
