A raised lantern revealed a messenger who had a letter, and he must see the fort's commander – it's urgent. Leery, the sentry allowed access, but warned the soldier to take care. Rarely does Fort Atkinson receive visitors this time of night. There may be trouble in the air. The messenger slipped past, but the guards can't see that there are others with him: visitors from a different century, wearing clothes from a future time. Invisible and perceived as mere shadows they go undetected, and without question, they traveled quietly in a single line. So by candlelight these visitors followed the messenger, as he guided them through this history: Fort Atkinson State Historical Park from 1819-1827, it guarded our country's manifest destiny.
