Junior Duck
Stamp
By Justin Haag
Students in kindergarten through
12th grade will once again show
off their skills as waterfowl artists
during the Federal Junior Duck Stamp
Competition.
Each year, hundreds of entries
from students throughout Nebraska
are judged at a public event in the
Panhandle. This year's entries, which
are due March 15, will be judged at the
Educational Service Unit 13 center in
Scottsbluff on March 23.
Promise Raumaker, a 13-year-old
student of the Debie Plog Art Studio
in Omaha, won last year's Nebraska
competition. Raumaker used colored
pencil, oil pastel and acrylic paint to
create an image of a king eider in flight
– a large sea duck that spends most of
the year in coastal marine environments
and breeds on the Arctic tundra in June
and July.
The Junior Duck Stamp Conservation
Program, administered by the U.S. Fish
and Wildlife Service, provides students
throughout the United States a learning
opportunity that combines both art and
science. Every year, artists and wildlife
educators visit schools to introduce the
competition and assist the students.
Each year's winning entry is
placed on the next year's Nebraska's
waterfowl stamp. It also moves on
to compete against other states'
winners and a chance to be chosen
for the national junior duck stamp – a
collector's item that is available for $5.
For details about the competition,
contact Lydia Patrick, Nebraska's
contest coordinator, at lydia_patrick@

guidelines may be found at fws.gov/
