Visitor
The visitor in the May 2018 issue of NEBRASKAland is on
page 36. It is a velvet ant.
In reading about this insect, I found this is actually a
wingless female wasp. It was also mentioned that the male
has wings. The article also stated that the velvet ant is known
as the "cow killer ant." The name was given to the velvet ant
because of the reputation of the female's sting. It is said that
the sting is so painful that it could kill a cow! Wow!

Good morning,
I found the ant on page 36, I believe it is a red ant.
Really enjoyed the "Native foods of NE."
Thanks for another great issue

Phillip Ciesluk of Omaha shared this photo on Facebook of
pelicans at Standing Bear Lake. "I was hesitant to go out that
day since it was really cloudy. But I'm glad I did ... pelicans are
so much fun to watch," he said.

little owlet fledge the nest. ... A truly fascinating experience!"
