APRIL 2016 • NEBRASKAland 27 Six-spotted fishing spiders (Dolomedes triton) possess excellent vision, which helps them hunt aquatic animals such as other invertebrates, tadpoles and occasionally small fish. Fungus is an integral part of the nutrient cycle in an ecosystem, helping to decompose organic materials and return them to the earth. They can also prove to be very interesting, such as these dead man's fingers (Xylaria polymorpha) that eerily resemble their namesake. ▲ ▲
