MAY 2018 • NEBRASKAland 25 snow and provide fishing and early- season duck hunting opportunities. Three reservoirs – Rock Bass, Agate and Boardgate – are targeted for panfish and largemouth bass. A Rocking Place Big game, birds and fish are not the only quarry here. Other prizes lie "beneath the surface." Volcanic ash that fell over the land millions of years ago is responsible for landforms that boost the grasslands' appeal. It is also responsible for gumbo – the clay-heavy soil that turns the surface into a grease-like tire-spinner with a little precipitation. Among the clay soils are rocks that washed down from the rising Black Hills ages ago and are now attractive to collectors. Rock hounds come from afar looking for prized finds that continue to surface, including Fairburn, A red fox peers from behind a pile of downed trees in Warbonnet Creek valley north of Harrison. A garter snake moves near a watering hole on the Oglala National Grassland west of Toadstool Park.
