By Brenna McFadden, Nebraska Tourism Commission Travelogue Visit North Platte North Platte ● PHOTO BY JULIE GEISER N orth Platte, located in Lincoln County, is a town rich with the history of one of the most colorful figures of the American Old West, Buffalo Bill Cody. Come explore the places of lore where rodeos offer great entertainment and other adventures abound. Do With so much history in this town you may find it hard to decide what not to visit while you're spending time in North Platte. The Golden Spike Tower offers a bird's eye view of the World's Largest Railroad Classification Yard. Stop here first to get an idea of all the possibilities this town has to offer. Some of the more notable attractions include the Buffalo Bill State Historical Park, the Lincoln County Historical Museum and Cody Park. Be sure to put NEBRASKAland Days in your calendar on June 13 – it is an event you won't want to miss! Eat Pals Brewing Company produces and serves homebrewed beer, incredible cheese curds and house-crafted pizza. If you are interested in a nice breakfast and lunch spot you can swing by the Espresso Shop. North Platte is also home to restaurants that serve unique and interesting cuisines – the Canteen Bar & Lounge and Tempura Japanese Restaurant are just two of the local favorites. Stay If you're looking for a cozy escape, Li'l Bit Country Cabin is where country meets city. This peaceful cabin on the edge of town is nestled in the pines between large gardens and a rustic wildlife sanctuary. Want more of a larger hotel experience? The Best Western, Comfort Inn, Hampton Inn and recently renovated Holiday Inn Express are great options, too. Shopping North Platte offers a unique shopping experience. You can visit Nebraska's largest souvenir and western gift store and an Old West Museum all at the Fort Cody Trading Post. If you are feeling adventurous you can spend all day at the Grain Bin Antique Town which features 15 historic grain bins filled to the brim with antiques. You won't find an experience like this anywhere else. Explore Dusty Trails offers a variety of activities ranging from horseback riding, tanking, kayaking, canoeing or just hanging out at a petting zoo. If you're looking to soak up some sun, head south of town to Lake Maloney, a popular spot for boating, fishing, water sports, camping and family fun. If you are a mountain biker then you are in luck, for Potter's Pasture has some of the best mountain bike trails around and they are suitable for riders of any ability. ■ Visitors at Buffalo Bill Ranch State Historical Park.
