12 NEBRASKAland • OCTOBER 2014 By Cristina Woodworth Say goodbye to lugging your bulky DSLR camera around on outdoor excursions: Instagram's got you covered. Simply download the popular free photo-editing app onto your Android or iPhone and start snapping photos of your camping trips, paddling outings, picnics and other outdoor adventures. Then, pick from 19 different filters to add a little excitement to your pictures. Here's a breakdown of some of the best Instagram filters to use on your outdoorsy photos to give them a little something special: 1) Walden: Increases exposure and adds a soft, yellow tint to pictures. This filter adds unique, aged color to bright photos of activities like hiking, kayaking and biking. 2) Lo-Fi: Enriches colors and adds stronger shadows by upping the saturation in the photo. Use this filter to emphasize colors in flowers, grasses and trees. 3) Sierra: Adds a soft, faded look. This filter is good for making photos at dusk or dawn look calm and peaceful. 4) Toaster: Ages the image by adding a bright spot in the center and a dramatic vignette around the edges. To add a summery feel to photos of picnics and the like, use this filter. 5) Mayfair: Applies a warm, pink tone to photos, along with a soft vignette around the edges. This filter puts more emphasis on the center of photos and adds warmth and softness to landscape scenes. ■ This Instagram image of a bike on the MoPac East Trail in Lincoln applies the lo-fi filter to bring out bold colors.
