4 NEBRASKAland • OCTOBER 2014 Junior Duck Stamp Winner The Best of Show for the 2014 Nebraska Junior Duck Stamp Contest was won by Creighton Scott of Omaha. Creighton is a 14-year-old student at Debie Plog Art Studio. Creighton's entry was selected from over 500 entries from across the state. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Scottsbluff office, hosted this year's contest which was judged on March 28 at the Gering Civic Center. The top 36 entries will be exhibited throughout the state at Nebraska Game and Parks Commission offices, Cabela's retail stores in LaVista, Kearney and Sidney, and other locations throughout the year. Winner of Reader's Choice Photo Contest Erik Johnson's photograph of silhouetted red-winged blackbirds taking flight over the setting sun north of Lincoln took first place in this year's NEBRASKAland Magazine Photo Contest Reader's Choice Division. Congratulations to Erik. Photo Special My two daughters and I just completed a 17-day camping trip around Nebraska, starting in Ponca then on to Valentine, Chadron, Scottsbluff, Ogallala and ending in Burwell for the rodeo. My main purpose for this trip was to show my kids the gorgeous and varied landscapes in our state. Highway 20 is a perfect example of this; the heavy oak forests of northeastern Nebraska, to the rolling endless Sandhills, the buttes of Chadron and the desolate moonscape of Toadstool. I picked up the Collector's Edition issue and smiled as I read the introduction. Those words further solidified my decision to tour our state. Many of the photos published we experienced. I'm sure my endless blathering about the pioneers fell on deaf ears, but I hope some of it sunk in! So thank you for possibly introducing naysayers to the beauty that is Nebraska. Even without mountains or oceans, this is one picturesque state! Kristi Blake Farrington via Facebook Ron Johns of Kearney has been enjoying a different side of lakes in Nebraska and elsewhere for nearly 50 years, and teaching others the same for 40 years. He's had his "Scuba" plate for about 30 years, as long as he's owned Heartland Scuba Center. His wife's car is adorned with "Scuba2."
