4 NEBRASKAland • JANUARY-FEBRUARY 2016 Brad Goetsch's "A Message From Heaven" photograph won the Reader's Choice Award for NEBRASKAland's 2015 Photo Contest. Brad Goetsch's "A Message From Heaven" photograph won the Reader's Choice Smiling Dog The photo on the back cover of the December 2015 issue is the greatest! We decided to save that picture so that if anyone ever needs cheering up, all they need to do is look at that picture! She not only looks like she is having a great time, but also really wants to have her picture taken. We had a yellow Lab some years ago who we could easily imagine in that hat with that grin, but Abby is the best. Thanks to her human companions for sharing with everyone. John Crawford Valentine, Nebraska Count Lilly In This is a picture of my 10-year-old niece, Lilly Counts, whom I took up in the Sandhills in Cherry County north of Halsey on private land of some friends that we have been going on for many years. At a time when many lands in Nebraska are increasingly being attached to "for payment/lease hunts," there are still many Nebraska farmers and ranchers that like to let folks hunt, with permission, who they know have a love for the land and Nebraska and hunting. Lilly is an adventurous young lady from Plano, Texas, and has talked about wanting to come along on one of our hunts for the last couple of years. She waited patiently with her .410 shotgun in 25 degrees and snow, and with one shot had her first turkey. A memory that she will always have and another young hunter for future years of Nebraska hunting! Tim Counts Temple, Texas Deer hunter Evan Horak took this photo with his iPhone through his rifle scope while in the Keya Paha Unit near Mills during the November firearm season. The little buck kept hanging out near the blind where Evan and his father were sitting in.
